CABO BOING – BLOB ON A GRID

by

From the realm of MACULA DOG cometh CABO BOING, NYC’s Brian Esser offering up some of the best bad news electro-pop that I’ve had to deal with in some time. I guess it’s not all bad news, but this is certainly not pure good time music. It is sinister in its pop effectiveness. Seeing CABO BOING live a little ways back (@ the MOTHERLODE fest in Somerville) made me uneasy. And while Mr. Boing was nice enough I kept kind of looking around for him to take off his face like Sarah Palmer or something (UPDATE: no faces were removed in my presence). Appears this recent tape is CB’s debut and it is called BLOB ON A GRID. “Nitwit of Gizmo” drips of a WEEN loosed upon the local chiptune shop vibe. For the record, this is MY goddamn vibe. It’s also straight up the most perfect(ly out of order) piece of pop songwriting on this record full of killer tunes. Listen repeatedly for hours, even days! CB you have my heart. Can I get it back soon though? Out on the exquisite HAORD RECORDS.
