BUFU RECORDS — THE LENTILS HOLIDAY PARTY 2014

by

A few years ago I stumbled upon the then-newly released A HAPPY JAWBONE FAMILY X-MAS GIFT TO YOU, 2011. VOL. 1: OPERATION HO! HO! HO! by Bratteboro, VT’s Happy Jawbone Family Band on Bandcamp. It was the crunchy, weird-fi, brashly tongue-in-cheek antidote to Mariah Carey Christmas, and I eagerly awaited Volume 2. When Happy Jawbone broke up earlier this year, I finally made peace with the fact that it was never going to happen.

So, while the 5-song Lentils Holiday Party 2014 (BUFU Records) isn’t that fully-formed, totally nutso Christmas album I’d been wishing for, it inhabits the same strange, kooky planet, and is, in turn, pretty satisfying. Featuring two catchy Christmas jingles by The Lentils— which is the new project from Happy Jawbone’s Luke Csehak– along with contributions from Brattleboro’s Peter’s Window and Boston’s Free Pizza and Ben Katzman’s DeGreaser, The Lentils Holiday Party packs a punch. A spiked punch that somebody dropped jelly beans and Hershey’s Kisses into.

The sweet “Secret Santa pt. II” by The Lentils is a highlight, and manages to make the lyrics “I’m gonna buy you a perfume diffuser/I’m gonna sniff on you/Your secret santa’s gonna sniff on you” sound endearing rather than creepy. Ben Katzman’s “Yuletide Shred 4 A Jewish Boy” is also necessary listening. It’s everything you think it would be, and more, including a Hava Nagila portion.

The best part of this, though, are the party conversations and non-sequiturs between songs–including a pretty great voicemail after “Secret Santa” and grandparent conversation after Free Pizza’s “Osum Christmas Carol”. You’ll definitely want to party with The Lentils and their BUFU pals after listening all the way through.
