Blew – Built to Keep You Out

by

Blew presents a perfectly balanced mixture of melancholia and hopefulness packed into their latest, beautifully written three-song EP, Built to Keep You Out.

The EP starts out with the tragically charming track, “The Time It Takes to Hit the Ground After Jumping Off a Ten-Story Building.” Entering with just Nick Giordano’s vocals and a slow, echoing guitar, you feel as if you may plunge into your saddest memories as you dramatically gaze out of a raindrop-covered car window. But after one minute and 25 seconds, the entirety of the band joins in to create a cacophony of driving, whirring music that raises your hopes just high enough to escape the sorrow you previously felt lurking.

Immediately following is “Fearful Symmetry.” With droning guitars and bass, as well as multiple vocal layers courtesy of Giordano and Suzanna Yeremyan, the five-minute track immediately evokes a nostalgia for authentic ‘90’s shoegaze. The song follows the fundamentals of any prominent shoegaze song of that decade, but also offers a fresh energy that sets it apart.

“Only a Dream…!” closes the EP in the same way it was started—with a simplistic intro to a strong, thunderous, and more complex second half. As any good EP does, Built to Keep You Out leaves you wanting more. (And you’re in luck—Blew is recording a full-length album in July!)
