BOSTON/NE BANDS, Fresh Stream

Blau Blau – KISS KISS

by

Before even listening to KISS KISS by newly formed Boston band Blau Blau, it’s evident that the release is going to be stellar. Lira Mondal and Caufield Schnug of Mini Dresses join forces with Will Henriken and Travis Hagan of CosMc to form an all-star lineup of some of Boston’s best.

The opening track, “No Heaven,” is an instant hit. It could have been the memorable single that soundtracked a teen’s youth in the late ‘80’s, but could easily be just as standout and influential in the 21st century. Everything about the the track is euphoric—the dreamy, but formidable vocals of Mondal, the dark, driving bass and drum lines, the ringing reverbed riff that emerges and dances anxiously throughout the song. “No Heaven” encapsulates the tortured beauty that post-punk bands like The Smiths so often tapped into in their songs. The pure melodic and emotional impact generated within one minute and 39 second is astounding.

Blau Blau continues to impress with edgier tracks “Star Come Out” and “Harm.” The dreaminess remains a constant theme, but hints of subtle chaos work their way into the instrumentation. The result is a comforting, catchy sense of musical paranoia.

“Kiss Kiss” closes the EP by pondering recent reveries, while snapping back to reality occasionally with explosive outbursts of “kiss kiss!” As the last note of the song rings out, the instant reaction is to press play and listen to Blau Blau’s masterfully concocted EP all over again.
