BLACK PUS/OOZING WOUND – SPLIT LP

by

Black Pus and Oozing Wound: ew.

But also: AWESOME!

Providence institution Brian Chippendale’s BLACK PUS offer up two new blood-boiling drum noise freakouts for this here split LP. “Blood Will Run” and “Total Eclipse” are the shortest and longest songs by either band on this record, respectively. The former features a much cleaner vocal take than we’re used to hearing from Chippendale, accompanied for the first half of the song by nothing more than a steady drum beat. The lyrics reference the horrendous slaying of Jordan Davis and Chippendale’s drumming paints both the brutality of the incident and the intended loudness of the music nicely.

“Total Eclipse” is a mini-epic that goes from repetitive and almost danceable to jammy and psychedelic to near-ambient. One of Chippendale’s strengths as a drummer is that he sounds just as intent and punishing doing a straight repetitive rhythm as he does when the fills and rolls are flying and “Total Eclipse” totally highlights that. The snares have an almost techno precision and regularity.

OOZING WOUND are new to me. The Chicago group’s three contributions to this album are ugly, sludgy and metallic with vocals that range from taunting and aggressive to pained howls. Pair that with song titles like “Ganja Gremlin” and “All Things Must Pass Out” and you’ve got a good thing going.

BLACK PUS/OOZING WOUND SPLIT LP is available now from Thrill Jockey. You can stream the rest of the record exclusively here. Black Pus will be joining Japanese freaker legends OOIOO for a show this Saturday July 19th at Cafe 939 in the Back Bay.
