Whether you’re talking to a lovable weirdo or a seasoned film critic, the consensus is always the same when it comes to Harry Dean Stanton: he’s one of the most prolific character actors of our time. Having appeared in almost seventy films throughout his career, Stanton remains a strangely familiar figure in American cinema, defined by his notably gaunt face marked by a pair of hollow eyes. Yet, despite a visual familiarity, he’s also an actor clouded by an intriguing ambiguity that hides his sense of self.

The Museum of Fine Arts honors Stanton’s shrouded identity in an upcoming series that conforms to his belief that “There is no self.” The MFA presents a diverse program that chronicles many performances in the actor’s career between classics such as Pretty in Pink (1986) and Paris, Texas (1984) as well as the ever-divisive Fire Walk With Me (1992). Discover or revisit your favorite shades of Stanton’s psyche in what is sure to be an amazing cap on his career. Catch his classics and his final feature Lucky (2017) in this celebration running through December.
