February in Boston brings polar vortexes, wintry mix, and general malaise, but it’s one of our favorite times of the year for one simple reason: The Boston Science Fiction Film Festival! Currently in its 44th year (!), Boston SCIFI is a 10 day extravaganza of the genre’s finest, from stone-cold classics to world premieres, alongside special guests, panels, workshops, and more.

Perhaps fittingly for a world that increasingly feels stranded in a sinister alternate timeline, this year’s fest includes a record number of documentaries, including LIFE AFTER FLASH, about ex-Flash Gordon Sam Jones (in attendance!), WORLDS OF URSULA LE GUIN, and WIZARDS OF HOLLYWOOD, a work-in-progress which will screen at the Charles Hayden Planetarium (!!).

Of course, it wouldn’t be a sci-fi festival without a little “fi,” and there will be no shortage of spectacular and inventive narratives about the assorted shapes of things to come. In particular, we’d be remiss if we didn’t mention the world premiere of Michael Neel’s mindblowing animated feature INFINITE SANTA 8000, which Boston Hassle will be presenting on Friday, 2/15, complete with a live Q&A with Neel himself (hosted by your humble author!). And, of course, all will build to the legendary 24-hour movie marathon, which will leave you in the perfect state of mind to ring in Presidents’ Day 2019. See you in the future!
