GENDER BENDING FASHION ON FILM

Thu 4/18 – Thu 5/2 @ MFA

All screenings $13 ($10 for MFA members)

Whether it’s Clara Bow’s flapper chic, Pam Grier’s ‘70s cool, or Alicia Silverstone’s hyper-stylized valley girl, film and fashion have been symbiotic since the dawn of cinema. And as much as film has captured or influenced fashion of the moment, it’s also played a role in exploring the furthest reaches of what fashion could be, where boundaries bleed and blend and where fashion becomes playground, exploration, and experiment: Marlene Dietrich’s tuxedos, Tim Curry’s punk-rock cabaret, and even Mulan’s suit of armor.

In honor of film’s progressive fashion history and in harmony with the museum’s “Gender Bending Fashion” exhibition, the Museum of Fine Arts will be screening movies that showcase groundbreaking and boundaryless fashion.

These gender-bending moviesLiquid Sky, Colette, A Simple Favor, Black Panther, Orlando, and The Man Who Fell to Earthrepresent a portion of the myriad of ways that clothing can allow folks to express themselves outside of conservative traditions and expectations of style, showcasing how fashion can prove powerfully transformative for both the individual and society at large.
