To be totally honest, I liked Beverly‘s The Blue Swell a little bit less when I realized penultimate track “You Used to Be” wasn’t about Dawson’s Creek (I could have sworn the lyrics were, “Whatever happened to Pacey? Whatever happened to Jen?”).
But, after a brief YouTube digression back to the late 90’s, I returned to The Blue Swell for a second listen, and then a third. And though it seems like beachy indie-rock really had its day in the sun a few years ago, The Blue Swell delivers with a set of sometimes raucous, sometimes sweet, but always introspective pop tracks. “Victoria”, which starts out with a simple vocal track and blossoms into a breezy indie-rock anthem, is a highlight, as is the jangly “The Smokey Pines” and the rocked-out album opener, “Bulldozer”.
The Blue Swell is out now– just in time for summer. Check it out via Kanine Records, and stream “You Used To Be” below.
