Basement Babes Interview with Show Mom Collective

by

Basement Babes: How would you like to introduce yourself to our readers?

Show Mom Collective: Hi! We are Show Mom Collective, a group of people who book shows in Boston. We prioritize the booking of marginalized artists in our community, and strive to create safer and more inclusive spaces for our shows.

BB: What is Show Mom Collective? (if not answered in introduction) What inspired you to start it?

SMC: We decided to start Show Mom Collective about a year into our time as show bookers. We needed a moniker and band blessed us with the name “Show Mom” in a not so nice way. It stuck!

BB: You recently hosted the second “Show Mom Fest” – what are some of the challenges of putting a big event like that together?

SMC: Putting any show together has a bunch of challenges that come along with it. We stress on things such as timing and making sure all the bands have everything they need to play, but we also want to make sure people who come to our shows feel welcome and safe. All the things that go into a show working out is multiplied when the bill has 14 acts on it. Keeping the show running smoothly is tough and it all takes a lot of organization, but booking shows works the same way as putting a puzzle together, and ends up being HUGELY worth it.

BB: What has been your proudest moment as a promoter? Or, what show are you most proud of?

SMC: It’s hard to choose any one specific moment. Show Mom Fest 2 was definitely at the top of the list though. We reached every goal we set out to achieve and we felt that people took away some great memories, which is all we want at the end of a show.

BB: What is your dream show line-up?

SMC: OOOOOH, so many to choose from. If Cowboy Band got back together and played a show with PWR BTTM, Downtown Boys, Sheer Mag and Junglepussy, I’d be pretty happy. That would be the most sonically diverse bill though, so no expectations.

BB: Do you have any words of advice for girls who want to book their own shows?

SMC: It’s not hard! Go out there and just do it. Booking a show is as simple as asking bands to play, getting a venue, promoting the show and paying the bands. Don’t take any shit from anyone! Know that you are in charge when running your own show. If you ever need any help, shoot us a message!
