ROOM 40 has just drowned out Friday in one minute flat. Lawrence English’s excellent Australia-based experimental label recently dropped a seductive teaser for Austin Buckett’s new collection of Grain Loops. Inspired by a past experiment with nationally broadcasted white noise, the Australian-based composer took his fascination with temporal-framing to a new level. Grain Loops contains 30 one minute loops that use only sand paper and snare drum as sample sources.
Buckett’s attention to detail is mesmerizing. “11” is a pure display of vital, rhythmic texture. Here, the loop is used as a constantly re-forming taskmaster. Attention is placed in the sweeping, constant shock, rather than the return to familiarity. Grain Loops looks to be a seriously dense new entry in the ROOM 40 catalog – pick it up here.
