ASTRAL SOCIAL CLUB – FOUNTAIN TRANSMITTER MEDICATIONS

by

ASTRAL SOCIAL CLUB is the solo project of Neil Campbell, a prolific British musician active since the 80’s and former member of A Band and Vibracathedral Orchestra. After leaving Vibracathedral Orchestra in 2006, Campbell created Astral Social Club and started pumping out CD-Rs of noisy droning electronic psychedelia, often experimenting with broken, fucked up forms of dance music.

His latest release is the nearly 2-hours long FOUNTAIN TRANSMITTER MEDICATIONS, out on VHF Records. Perky and playful opener “Infinity Thug” swaggers along at a laid back tempo amidst a droning background of colorful and spacey synths. The first side ends with “Grisly Terroir,” which showcases Campbell’s affinity for weaving club floor beats into far out soundscapes. The second and third sides are comprised of 20+ minute long epics that bring out the full breadth of Campbell’s sonic palette, from glorious instrumental jams on “Diamonds in the Dreich” to seething, glitchy future soundscapes on “Erotic Meditation.”

Fountain Transmitter Medications is a vibrantly imagined album, rocking a full-bodied and eclectic sound that’s dripping in ideas and thick with atmosphere. Its bright, technological ambience is just the thing for warmin’ up a claustrophobic winter night these coming dark months. It may also be some of the most fun experimental music you’ll hear this year, especially if you’ve never heard Astral Social Club before. The full album is streaming on SoundCloud, so go on and give it a listen.
