ARP – “Pulsars e Quasars”

by

The title track of ARP’s latest EP, PULSARS E QUASARS, puts you in a daze. It’s easy to get lost in the simple electric chords and the hypnotic, steady vocals molded by 70’s English pop.

The song feels good, until you pair it with the video. Then it all starts to feel uncomfortable. That’s a healthy discomfort. That’s the strain between the sound and the visuals that really fills out the experience of the track.

The video for PULSARS E QUASARS is a mash up of contradictions, a dizzying series of color-washed, overlapping shots. It’s intimate yet anonymous, scenic but bodily, distant then right up close.

The speed of the video and the invasive nature of the images is aggressive. Yet, the reluctance to focus on any one of those images for more than a moment feels shy and passive.

With this, ARP does something increasingly uncommon, he builds a video on top of a song, creating a more extensive piece of art, rather than mimicking or simply illustrating the work he’s already created.

PULSARS E QUASARS was released under Brooklyn label MEXICAN SUMMER and follows the 2013 album MORE.
