(8/14) THE DOUBLE (2013) DIR. RICHARD AYOADE @BRATTLE

by

“You’re a failure,” you say to yourself, “my job is leading nowhere, no woman is attracted to me, let alone notices me, and my own mother acts like I’m a gadfly.” If that monologue sounds depressing and pure Dostoyevskian, it’s because it is. But THE DOUBLE manages to take that concept and subverts it through two key ingredients: British comedian Richard Ayoade’s droll, spot on direction and Jesse Eisenberg’s tour de force dual performance, easily eclipsing his work in THE SOCIAL NETWORK. Simon (Eisenberg) is the pitiful protagonist whose above monologue is a daily routine for him, a nameless bureaucrat infatuated with coworker Hannah (Mia Wasikowska) who lacks the nerve to ask her out on a date. Then comes James (Eisenberg), a new employee at the office who’s the exact opposite of Simon; a charming, confident, assertive individual that looks exactly like Simon in every aspect, and isn’t afraid of getting what he wants, which includes taking over Simon’s life. Or are they actually one and the same? Find out tonight at the Brattle Theatre and make up your own mind.
