(4/7) HEARTS AND MINDS (1974) DIR. PETER DAVIS @BRATTLE (DIRECTOR IN PERSON)

by

Long before the medium became (in)famously politicized with Michael Moore, documentaries had initially become so with Hearts and Minds, an ironically titled account of the Vietnam War examining the factors which made it such a tragedy. A plethora of military experts, intellectual policymakers, affected veterans and Vietnamese nationals are interviewed and juxtaposed with archival footage, recorded prior as well as during the war, in an effort to understand the conflict and its consequences. What’s presented is a story full of hubristic American foreign ambitions that doesn’t pretend to be objective, nor allow those whose views are expressed to be patronized. Peter Davis, the film’s director who also won an Academy Award for it, will be on hand at the screening to take questions and also discuss his purpose for creating the documentary.
