There’s no better time than summer to lose yourself in tropical narcotics drones of SUN ARAW. This Southern Californian acid surf sage has been searing minds with dubbed out amazon riddims and psych soul bruisers since at least 2008. The video for Grip, from his latest release The Inner Treaty (Drag City), returns to his slow burn psych-drone roots, with sparse, dribbling percussion dance with alien sounds – something like a warped koto – in the warm reverbating soundscape, expanding and contracting in endless echos, buoyed by sparkling guitar tones that drift aimless yet sure in the Way. The video, by Daniel Brantley, perflectly pairs this wandering spirit with an abstract juxtaposition of vibrant summer hues, shapes shimmering in a comforting, all encompassing light. Sun Araw is a true master of serenity, come hear his sermon.
