Vacations — “Fall In Love”

by

Were you one of the lucky few shaking your butt to the dulcet and dancy surf-punk tunes of Texas’ Fungi Girls at their Boston debut at SBC in Allston early this summer? If you haven’t yet checked out Fungi Girls, maybe you should; they’ve somehow managed to redefine the tired cliche that the lo-fi surf/garage rock genre has become. Their music is unpretentious, catchy, relentless, and dark and psychedelic in tone in a way that makes them stand out from other bands.

Still a member of Fungi Girls, guitarist Jacob Bruce is embarking on his first solo record as Vacations, and “Fall in Love” is the first recording for the upcoming album. It’s just as raw as Fungi Girls tracks but has a lighter feel. “Fall in Love” is jangle pop, when it’s never really felt right to define anything from Fungi Girls as such. Washed out, dreamy vocals tack a backseat to the guitar lines and drum machine beat, though it might be nice to hear them turned up a bit.

Rather than a beach-inspired dance party, “Fall in Love” is an unrequited surf daydream for the hopelessly landlocked. After all– it may be warmer in Fort Worth, but it’s hours away from the ocean. What’s there to do but make music? Hopefully it won’t be a long wait before the rest of this album shapes up. Stream “Fall In Love” below.
