(10/10 & 10/11) THE DESCENT (2005) DIR. NEIL MARSHALL @COOLIDGE

by

Man, talk about going from unthinkably awful to worse. Following the tragic and sudden deaths of her husband and daughter, Sarah (Shauna Macdonald) reunites with old girlfriends in the Carolinas to go spelunking as a way of overcoming her grief. But, before you can say “Holy claustrophobia, Batman!”, the group becomes trapped in a ginormous cave system with no hope of rescue, escape only possible by finding a way out themselves. Making matters even more bleak are freakish, cavern dwelling monsters that care about two things; human blood and hissing, in that order. And let’s not forget to mention serious vengeful distrust between Sarah and the alpha female of the group, Juno (Natalie Mendoza). Nail bitingly tense, primordially scary and emotionally elegiac, The Descent is an outstanding modern horror film of the first order about the will to overcome. Dive in and witness the nightmare in 35mm.
