(12/15) NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN (2007) DIR. JOEL & ETHAN COEN @BRATTLE

by

Bowl cuts never looked so scary in one of the best films the Coens’ have ever realized. No Country is a dark, borderline nihilistic story that examines the cruel hand fate can deal and how generous actions sometimes result in worse outcomes. Llewelyn Moss (Josh Brolin) is an unassuming man who stumbles upon a drug deal turned massacre in the American Southwest. Discovering millions in cash, Moss leaves the dead mobsters and takes the dirty money back home. Unbeknownst to him, however, sociopathic hitman Anton Chigurh (Javier Bardem) has been assigned to recover the mob’s dough by any means necessary. What follows is a tense, unrelenting game of cat and mouse between the two men that will leave a bloody path all along the US-Mexican boundary line. You’ll be riveted, intellectually challenged by the seemingly simple story and come to fear coin tosses after this.
