(1/17 & 1/26) STALKER (1979) DIR. ANDREI TARKOVSKY @HFA

by

The beautiful and haunting film STALKER kicks off the Harvard Film Archive’s Andrei Tarkovsky series tonight.  A master of the long take, the Russian director’s film has some of the most dreamy and poetic visuals ever captured.  STALKER is actually a loose adaptation of the novel Roadside Picnic; in this version a guide is tasked with bringing two men through “the Zone” where physics and reality are distorted. They are searching for a room that is supposed to have the ability to make anyone’s desires come true, however it may read beyond their original thoughts, delving deeper into the subconscious bringing forth dangerous truths. There surprisingly isn’t a Criterion copy of this movie yet so be sure to get out to Harvard and check this out on the big screen. There is one more chance to see it at the end of the month on January 26th in case you can’t make it there tonight.
