On a chilly Sunday night, three radically different acts put on an intimate show at the Dorchester Art Project. Melissa Weikart, Rectrix and The Suicide Magnets started the week off right and trail-blazed as one of the first few lineups to play at the new Brain-Arts space.

Starting things off was Melissa Weikart. After hoisting her keyboard onto the stage the local singer/songwriter played music from her recently released EP “Coffee” as well as a snippet of new music in the works. She was one of two solo sets of the night and the synergy between her voice and piano was top notch. While her voice put her unique lyrics front and center her fingers helped to drive forward stories and a series of vibes on the keys.

Following Melissa was Rectrix, who put on hands down the most visually captivating set of the night. Contrasting the previous act’s minimal keyboard setup Rectrix brought an arsenal of pedals, speakers and a turntable to the stage, doing a pretty good job filling up the small space despite being solo. Things in the room got a lot louder and darker. Rectrix combined noise, coming in different waves and volumes, with her own voice and at times spun an eerie record. The room was completely black aside from the light on one of her microphones, leaving only her face illuminated for much of the set. Hearing Rectrix perform without the visuals to accompany it wouldn’t be doing her act justice.

To close the night out Providence, RI’s trio, The Suicide Magnets took to the stage. Mixing reverberating, almost ghostly vocals, with some sweet drumming (and especially memorable bell parts), really smooth bass, and catchy guitar riffs. They felt like the perfect way to end the night. To make a great set even better they closed things out with an appropriately festive Christmas themed encore. The Suicide Magnets kept the energy from the previous two performers alive and made for a good ending to a Sunday night.
