Went There: 11/18 Guerrilla Toss, Ryan Power, The Electrician @ Hardcore Stadium

11/18 @ The Cambridge Elks Lodge

It was too easy to get lost in each set, all for different reasons. Being sucked in by The Electrician’s chaotic set, swept away on Ryan Power’s melodic cruise and being moved, literally and figuratively by Guerilla Toss’ enthusiastic set was what made this show so enveloping. With only three acts this show at the Elk’s Lodge managed to move spectators through a range of different genres and energies.

The opening set by The Electrician, featuring Boston Hassle’s own, Sam Potrykus, was a short but dope noise set. Seeing how an exercise ball could accompany the persistent percussion and other noises throughout the set was one of the most unique moments of the night. In only two songs the trio put on a great first show and set the bar high.

Nestled in between two more explosive sets, Ryan Power was a sort of calm before the storm. His songs all took on a sort of soothing vibe as the lyrical content of his pop tracks brought some dark and intimate themes front and center. The easy to dance along to solo performance fit into the night’s bill perfectly. His set was also unique in that it was a release show for his new LP, They Sell Doomsday.

Closing the night out was Guerilla Toss. As someone who is built more like a cardboard cutout than a sturdy human being I usually try to stay away from large pits at shows. This time however I found myself planted at the very front. Camera in hand I rode out the entire set and enjoyed every second of it. Guerilla Toss’ performance was a sort of perfect way to tie every different feeling from the night together into one last energetic set. It was almost impossible not to dance along to all of their songs. The combination of their funky bass and drum lines, powerful guitar lead and melodic synth and vocal performances brought a hyper pop energy to the night, only made better by the accompanying trippy visual projections.

All three acts made for a super fun night at the Elk’s Lodge. Getting to see three distinctly different sets back to back is something that keeps concert bills really interesting and always makes for a great time for music fans with a range of different tastes.
