Arts & Culture, Went There

WENT THERE: April First Fridays @450 Strip (South End)

by

SWEETY’S

My first stop this First Fridays was a brand new gallery! Located a couple blocks from the main 450 Strip, Sweety’s opened it’s doors with the show “TRU LOVE,” featuring work by Andisa Jones, Daniel Barreto, Adrielle Farr, Martin Kass,Oskar Brent Malone,Santiago Cardenas, and Branden Paillant. The gallery is run by Julia Pimes, Bryan Rodriguez, Ximena Izquierdo Ugaz and Eduardo Restrepo, a group of artists active in shaking up Boston’s art scene who promote racial equality and artistic risk taking.

FIND & FORM SPACE

My next stop was the Find & Form Space Gallery presenting “I Try and I Try and I Try,” a collection of video performance pieces. I loved Tamara Johnson’s “Come, Labor On” where she interacts with the city through constructing altered industrial elements.

ARS LIBRI

Ars Libri is currently showing work by Iranian artist Gohar Dashti. Dashti creates intricate tableaus full of unique characters. Laughter without a clear source and an ever present mysterious tail complicates the scenes and leaves the viewer thinking.

BOSTON SCULPTORS GALLERY

The Sculptors Gallery was packed with art this month. David A. Lang moved his entire studio into the gallery for “The Shop.” Mixed in among his workbenches cluttered with treasures are dozens of whimsical and mechanical contraptions.

The second room of the gallery houses “Short Stories: 2012 – 2014” by Eric Sealine. His fascinating sculptures tread between 2D and 3D, bending and stretching perspective.

CAROLL & SONS

I loved the elegant and graceful photos by Laura Letinsky in “Creases Turn Sour.”
