In checking out Twillerama, the travelling animation festival/ show put together by Brooklyn’s Morgan Miller, I see a very cool compendium of recent and classic short films (almost entirely animated). Beyond that, I also see a new way to package content. A different way to celebrate content in this day and age we live in, where the old guard is dead and dying, and the new guard is taking baby steps, and going on first dates.
This collection of shorts is crass, but the overarching idea is heady . . . AND stupid! Hosts Jeff Twiller and Randy J. Johnson (Vol. 1) or Rod Holcomb (Vol. 2) are animated, and they are streaming a live broadcast of their animation festival from a garbage dump (Vol. 1) and a rest stop (Vol. 2). A+ for presentation, and for bringing people together to watch and celebrate animation in a novel manner! Also, how did you know I want to throw music festivals at dumps and rest stops? Can’t be a coincidence.
I’ve only gotten to see Vol. 1 thus far, in which our belligerent and awkwardly nervous pair of animated host friends showcase the likes of George Griffin’s funny, The Club (“Damn bro, that’s a lot of fucking dicks”), Latvia’s Signe Baumane’s Teat Beat of Sex, in which a kirby trumps a squash sexually, and Danny and Simone Dresden’s Made You Cringe which celebrates(?) nonsexual(?) showers with Dad. Very entertaining stuff. Very weird. Often crude, and sometimes thought provoking. All of it a smart celebration of an art form that doesn’t get enough love! More Twillerama please.
