This Week In Experimental: Volume 57

by

Hello Experimenters!

I hope you didn’t miss me too much yesterday, but how rarely do we get an extra day without email? I couldn’t pass that up. I wish I could say I was out grilling and hiking, but it rained here all weekend; so, it was mostly reading and resting. I hope some of you got to do the same.

Heads up: there are a ton of June 1st deadlines here! That’s today.

Some other things:

Happy Pride!

Gabby

Things to Do

Assignment: This month, I challenge all of you to make a film in two weeks. Your goal should be to make something you can submit to festivals/open calls in two weeks. Your assignment this week is to formulate your idea. Maybe it’s something you’ve been meaning to tackle for a while; maybe it’s something you started and gave up on; maybe it’s a short technique experience. By next week, you should have an idea you can articulate to another human–this idea phase does not count as part of your two weeks.

Journal: For Pride Month, we’re writing letters. Each Pride Monday, I’m going to ask you to write a letter to someone. That person can be living or dead, real or fictional. You don’t have to share this letter in any way, but obviously if you feel brave and open go for it. I want to leave you with the quote that inspired me to share this: “Letter writing is transformative. Letter writing is harm reduction” – Red, Survived & Punished

  1. Write to the first queer/trans person you in your memory. This could be a younger version of yourself if you knew early; they could be someone you didn’t treat particularly well; they could be someone you only passed once on the street or someone still in your life. Center that person and their wholeness not you and your growth (potentially at their expense).
