Hello Experimenters!
What a truly strange time to be alive. I’m admittedly distracted today by the attacks on Palestinians and Colombians, the continued COVID-19 assault on India, and the intense paradox of repealing public health measures in the states in favor of the honor system. I don’t have anything clever to say or any solutions to offer. There are much more qualified and active voices to follow for things more concrete than anguish. Here are a couple: @vvalentinavvs (Colombia) & @jewishvoiceforpeace (Palestine).
In solidarity,
Gabby

Things to Do
Assignment: Now that you’ve identified an AAPI artist whose work speaks to your own practice and really immersed yourself in their work, it’s time to take things a step forward. In your immersion last week, you probably identified a favorite work or one that really sticks with you. How would you remake/respond to that work? For instance, if you chose Carol Nyugen’s Every Grain of Rice (featured last week) how might you make a work that is as personal to you and as EGR is to Carol and that highlights your own aesthetic practice and prowess? It is key that you still make this your own and that it speaks to the original work in some way–this is an exercise in artistic appropriation & homage, not cultural appropriation and self aggrandizement.
Journal: Do you have a recurring nightmare? Maybe just a recurring dream. Maybe it’s a recurring dream that has become so bothersome it’s become a nightmare? Describe it. What is it that’s so haunting? Why do you think it stays with you? Are there certain conditions that make it recur?
