BOSTON/NE BANDS, Fresh Stream

THE SHANGRI LIPS

by

I’m convinced that Hayley Thompson-King is actually multiple people. Between her two bands (BANDITAS, LOVE-UP TIME), teaching voice lessons, occasionally singing opera, and helping to run a music summer camp at the YMCA, it seems inconceivable that she has any spare time. She somehow does, because in addition to that laundry list of activities, this summer she started recording bands and has re-launched HARD TO KILL RECORDS.

First up on HTK are THE SHANGRI LIPS. You may remember front-woman Margaret Garrett from Boston’s legendary MR. AIRPLANE MAN, and if you do, you’re probably psyched that she’s got a new thing going. Don’t know what I’m talking about? Well, if you’re into super stripped down bluesy garage songs, don’t let this band pass you by. Influences range from The Velvet Underground and Bo Diddly, THE SHANGRI LIPS have crafted their own style of “one chord blues, three chord rock”. They hail from Northampton, Massachusetts but there’s zero Thurston Moore worship here, this is only rock n roll and I like it. Apparently THE OBLIVIANS like it too, THE SHANGRI LIPS are opening for them in Philadelphia and New York on October 3rd and 4th. Head over to their bandcamp, where you can preorder a 3 song 7″ of songs recorded by Thompson-King, with that you also get an instant download of all 8 songs from the session, and also a limited BANDITAS 7″.
