Nugs of Knowledge April 2015

by

A monthly bowlful of tidings and tidbits for the creatively inclined

Experience theater as you’ve never known it could be. Legendary Canadian director ROBERT LEPAGE of Ex Machina tells cerebral stories with a seductive aesthetic that captivates through movement, music, dialogue, technology and sheer wit. His show NEEDLES AND OPIUM is @ Emerson’s Cutler Majestic Theatre 4/9–4/12. If you see any play this year, make it this one. $25–89 at www.ArtsEmerson.org.

Probably best known for Under the Wave Off Kanagawa (Great Wave), KATSUSHIKA HOKUSAI still stands as Japan’s most influential artist of all time, having directly influenced Art Nouveau, Impressionism, Post-Impressionism, and countless individuals. MFA Boston will have over 200 pieces from his impressive 70-year career 4/5–8/9. Remember, it’s FREE after 4pm every single Wednesday. www.MFA.org

This month the Boston Public Libraries are cleaning house and selling the excess, which translates to a treasure trove of dirt-cheap books, photos, postcards, DVDs, CDs, records, and more at their regular BOOK SALES. The first one is over @ the Central Library (Copley Square) on Saturday 4/4, 10am–4pm. If A/V materials are what you’re after, hit up the South Boston branch sale on 4/11, 10am–2pm. www.bpl.org

Do make things that other people should buy? Are you a small business or a record label with merch to move? Are you cleaning out your place and have perfectly good crap you don’t want? Sign up to be a vendor at our next Black Market art/records/zine/flea market with Ignore Rock’n’Roll Heroes on Sunday 4/26, 11am–5pm @ Cambridge Community Center. Table space is forever affordable at $15–30, with discounts if you bring your own table.

Old nugs . . . still good.

CALL FOR WORK—If you’re a photographer who celebrates humans in their purest form (au naturel), then perhaps you should submit to NAVE GALLERY’s upcoming show NAKED. $15 entry and deadline is April 12. More info at here.

Thanks to some mysterious, generous donor we’d all like to know better, the RHODE ISLAND SCHOOL OF DESIGN MUSEUM (RISD Museum) is offering FREE MEMBERSHIP for one year to all Rhode Island–based artists/designers. If this is you or a friend, hop on this gravy train while it’s around in 2015. Use Discount code: RI-ARTIST. www.RISDmuseum.org

Dress to impress and head over to the MUSEUM OF FINE ART’s new exhibit on iconic American fashion photographer HERB RITTS, whose work from the ’80s and ’90s you’ll be sure to recognize.  His bold style and love for the figure elevated the public’s view of fashion as art, while his portraits helped establish cultural icons. Stop by any Wednesday after 4pm to get a free peek from now–11/8

Are you an artist looking for some opportunities but don’t know where to look? Get the full scope over at ArtSake.MassCulturalCouncil.org for a thorough-as-shit list of upcoming and current CALLS FOR ARTISTS in and around town. What’ve you got to lose?

If you’re looking to sharpen your skills in the figure-drawing department, head over to LIFE DRAWING with DAVID LEE @ Outpost 186 in Inman Square (Cambridge) any Sunday from 10am–1pm. Bring your own supplies and $15 for the model. All are welcome. www.Outpost186.com
