Itchy Cricket is Northampton’s Kelly Boyle. Her self-titled tape is the second release on the Gray Cake Tapes label. Cassette is the perfect format for this release. The analogue sound and lo-fi quality are a good match for the fragility of the songs. The eleven poppy folk songs, recorded primarily in a car according to the label, don’t break new ground but feel more self-contained than most music. Instead of seeking placement in the world of peers, Itchy Cricket’s songs look to be understood only within the world they create.
