Last month I headed over to check out SCANNERS for the first time. Billed as an “underground electronic dance party,” I knew there would be few regrets. Video camera in tow, I did some deep thinking while watching the lush and gratuitous projected images of video artists LSDV while DJ Wont spun records.
Isakleksr played a stunning sonic battle, followed by L Lewis, who blew me away with her layered beats—reminding one of graffiti walls illuminated by headlights speeding by at night, but on loop, for as long as you need to dance to. Had euphoric musical stylings not been enough, I was also impressed by witnessing an artist willing to lug around what could have been HAL9000 (but was probably a really cool 800-lb. mixer?). Wilted Woman (Berlin, Germany) closed the night with a perfectly exhausting set—presenting orchestrations that will be the soundtrack to debris, settling on that ground, finding its new place on earth, after the apocalypse.
Definitely looking forward to this month’s SCANNERS.
