Diane Arbus, Lady in a Rooming House Parlor, Albion, NY, 1963.
Haunting, startling, intriguing – all words that come to mind when looking at the work of photographer Diane Arbus, whose black and white images document the characters who occupy society’s margins. Discover more about the artist when Hilton Als, The New Yorker art critic and author of a new essay collection, White Girls, visits the MFA. In this lecture Als will touch on Arbus’ New York photographs and her subsequent relationship with her native city.

“I read Als not only because he is utterly extraordinary, which he is, but for the reason one is often drawn to the best writers—because one has a sense that one’s life might depend on them. White Girls is a book, a dream, an enemy, a friend, and, yes, the read of the year.”
