Gallery Tour + Film Screening @MIT List

If you’re feeling wild enough to brave the impending snow today, we hope it’s because you’re headed to MIT’s List Visual Art Center. Stop by this afternoon for a staff-guided tour of the galleries’ four current exhibits, three of which opened last weekend: List Projects: Kambui OlujimiSonia Almeida: Forward/Play/PauseHans Op de Beeck: Staging Silence (2), and Hourly Directional: Helen Mirra and Ernst Karel. If you haven’t already checked them out, it’s a great introduction to the shows. The tour starts at 1pm – don’t miss it!

At 2pm, settle in for a screening of two short films especially chosen by artist Helen Mirra to accompany and enrich the themes present in her sound installation, Hourly Directional, a collaborative project with artist Ernst Karel.

Here’s some info on the featured films:

Kick that Habit, directed by Peter Liechti. 1989, 43 min.

“Drawing on trace elements of Jazz and Arte Povera, Swiss duo Andy Guhl and Norbert Möslang use a range of cracked everyday electronic equipment to create abstract sound environments. Alongside free improvisation, they’ve devoted over 30 years to obsessively fathoming the potential of generative composition by analogue, non-computer-steered systems for their Voice Crack project. Peter Liechti’s “Kick That Habit” is set to be a music film classic – its artful, cinematically unique sequences transcend the usual parameters of documentary.” –Liechti Filmproduktion

Attention, Focus, and Motion, directed by Mary Lucier. 1975, 26 min.

ATTENTION, FOCUS, AND MOTIONStill frame from Lucier’s film, courtesy of the artist.

“Attention, Focus, and Motion is one of Lucier’s earliest black and white experiments with video technology and natural phenomena. Introducing themes that resonate throughout her work, Lucier investigates the intersection of landscape, motion and vision.” – Electronic Arts Intermix
