If you have found yourself wondering about the current condition of the international underground film scene, or have had an inexplicable urge to explore contemporary experimental cinema, you may want to check out this Wednesday’s screening of Pablo Mazzolo’s films at the MassArt Film Society. The program of films by this young Argentinean filmmaker ranges in formats from Super 8 to 35mm and incorporates a dynamic assortment of techniques used to create, mediate, and manipulate the celluloid image.
Mazzolo’s films are both conceptually intricate and visually delicate, exploring dense territories such as “the relationship between light and work”, “material creating material”, and “De-electronation of a molecular entity as a result of photoexcitation”. But don’t let that scare you – every image has a story – and Mazzolo’s stories are thick with the drama of tsunamis on the Mexican coastline, the dreams of rivers, and the beauty of sudden light.

According to the Comechingones natives, Quilpo river dreams of big falls at least once a year. Whoever is near the river at the time will be part of its dreams forever.
Shot in the sacred Comechingones´shrine.
“This shortfilm is a diary of my days at the Quilpo River, and also an ancient legend. I shot with my Super 8 camera in an area of the Quilpo river in Cordoba, considered to be sacred by the Comechingones aborigins. The Quilpo doesn’t have waterfalls so these were shot quite more to the south, near Mallín Ahogado in Rio Negro.
Then I intervened the undeveloped celluloid with light through different kinds of glass and masks. When I developed the film, I reprinted different positive frames over a new virgin celluloid. Material creating material. The river feeding itself. The film implodes. I try generating conditions for the unexpected to appear.” – P.M.

On March 11, 2011, there was an earthquake in the coastal region of Tohoku (Japan). The rupture of tectonic plates expanded through an area of 100,000 sq km. On the other side of the Pacific Ocean, in the coastal area of Oaxaca (Mexico) a tsunami alert was issued.
The film was shot in Oaxaca (Mexico) during a maximum tsunami warning brought about by the earthquake of Tohoku (Japan).
“In 2011, I was participating in the Oaxaca Screenwriter Lab (Mexico), when the earthquake started in Japan. In a few hours , the authorities announced a maximum tsunami warning, so I travelled with my camera to the coastal area of Oaxaca and I started to shoot a kind of film chronicle of the sea and the surroundings in those days.” – P.M.

De-electronation of a molecular entity as a result of photoexcitation. Light increases its oxidation state, at the same time it releases free radical electrons.
Shot in 16mm and regular 8 edited with optical printer.
End of the series about light and work. The light-work circuit shows its reverse activity.
About the Artist:
Pablo Mazzolo was born in Buenos Aires in 1976. He studied Image and Sound Design at University of Buenos Aires. He has made several short films exploring different celluloid formats and creating special devices to make images. His films have participated in festivals like Rotterdam Film Festival (Netherlands), New York Film Festival: Views from the Avant Garde, Hamburg Kurzfilmfestival (Germany), BAFICI (Buenos Aires), London Film Festival, Media City Film Festival (Canada), VIDEOEX (Switzerland), among others. He was also invited to attend in various film performances in museums like MOCANOMI, MAMBA, and MALBA. In the year 2011, his feature film script AM1019 participated in the Oaxaca Screenwriter Lab (Sundance-Toscano). His film OAXACA TOHOKU won the prize of Metropolitan Fund of Ars. In the year 2013, CONJECTURES won the 1st prize in the Media City Film Festival (Windsor, Canada).
He is interested in the onthological relationship between images and people. He is currently running workshops about visual perception and the creation of images for the mentally disabled and for psychiatric boarders. He is one of the founders of A.R.C.A. (Regional Archive for Amateur Cinema), dedicated to the preservation of amateur films and home movies.
