(6/7) LET’S GO TO THE RAT (2013) DIR. ANDREW SZAVA-KOVATS @MILL NO.5

by

Do you love DIY? Are you proud to be a member of our little city’s big scene? While you might just be dragging yourself out of bed (last night was sick!), here’s a reason for you to hurry the fuck up and get moving. Get up, jump in a car, and head on down to Lowell’s coolest spot – Mill No. 5. This awesome space is home to a small movie theatre, artist loft spaces, Vinyl Destination, & our Lowell media friend – Howl Magazine. More importantly, LET’S GO TO THE RAT is being presented for FREE by Howl in collaboration with this rock documentary’s director and Lowell resident Andrew Szava-Kovats.

The Rat (short for The Rathskeller) was the grimiest hole-in-the-wall music venue located in Boston – right smack in the middle of Kenmore Square. Although, it closed in 1997, the Rat was frequented by musicians of both local and national notoriety (THE RAMONES, DEAD KENNEDYS, HUSKER DU, R.E.M, etc., etc.). Szava-Kovats’ film lets us glimpse into the past to see the seeds from which the music we’ve come to love grew in the city we call home.
