(12/9 – 12/19) The Complete Coens @Brattle

by

Let’s get it out of the way right now: Joel and Ethan Coen are national treasures. If a director is to be judged solely by their body of work, the brothers easily rank among America’s greatest living filmmakers (for my money, their only real competition in this regard are Scorsese, Tarantino, and Spielberg). That body of work is playing in its entirety this month at the Brattle, beginning with their audacious debut BLOOD SIMPLE and culminating with INSIDE LLEWYN DAVIS (which premieres 12/20 @Coolidge). In between, there’s something for everyone, from white-knuckle thrillers (FARGO, NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN) to broad comedies (RAISING ARIZONA, THE BIG LEBOWSKI, O BROTHER WHERE ART THOU) to whatever the hell BARTON FINK is. Chances are, you’ve got a favorite film in this series – and if there’s any you missed the first time, you may walk away with a new one.
