(11/8) THE ROOM (2003) DIR. TOMMY WISEAU @ COOLIDGE

by

What is there to say about THE ROOM that hasn’t already been said? It’s the rock-star cult movie of our generation: PLAN 9 FROM OUTER SPACE and THE ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW rolled into one, with maybe a dollop of R. Kelly’s TRAPPED IN THE CLOSET thrown in for good measure. For the uninitiated, the allure of THE ROOM lies in its enigmatic writer/director/star Tommy Wiseau, who performs all three tasks as if he’s a space alien with only the most tenuous grasp of human behavior. The plot itself is nothing to write home about (boy meets girl, girl cheats on boy, boy spends hours and hours awkwardly throwing a football around), but the nonsensical script, claustrophobic direction, and Wiseau’s mush-mouthed, lumpen-faced performance have turned it into a worldwide midnight movie phenomenon. If you’ve never been, you need to experience it for yourself – just be sure to bring some plastic spoons.

Even if you’ve been to enough screenings that you never want to look at a rose again, you may want to attend this one to bone up for next weekend: on Friday, November 15, Greg Sestero, the generically handsome actor who plays Wiseau’s best friend Mark (his BEST FRIEND), will be at the Coolidge to read from his new tell-all memoir THE DISASTER ARTIST: MY LIFE INSIDE THE ROOM. Will Tommy Wiseau’s nationality finally be revealed? Will we finally learn where the film’s alleged six-million dollar budget came from (or, for that matter, where it went)? Will there be a prognosis for Lisa’s mother’s definite case of breast cancer? Come by next Friday at midnight to find out!
