On May 18 Courtney Barnett launched her North American tour at The Sinclair in Cambridge. Girl band Chastity Belt opened and played a set consisting of their new album Time to Go Home, a dreamy feminist rock record. The petite Australian took the stage and opened with “Canned Tomatoes (Whole),” off of her EP I’ve Got a Friend Called Emily Ferris. The melancholy lyrics lulled the audience—“Last week I turned twenty-four / You don’t call me anymore”—but the tone shifted to rock when Ms. Barnett started to play a riff accompanied by her drummer David Muddie and bassist Bones Sloane.
Barnett’s set was peppered with anecdotes giving insight into her growth as a musician. “When I was 18 I was in a cover band called Chameleon. Pretty good name for a cover band I think,” Barnett joked before playing an excellent cover of the Breeders’ “Cannonball.” She also covered the Lemonheads’ “Being Around,” which, had she not said she didn’t write it, could easily have been mistaken for one of Barnett’s own playful songs. Her songs have a distinct alternative ’90s rock influence, and her work on her new album Sometimes I Sit and Think and Sometimes I Just Sit reflects a stronger emphasis on lyricism than her past LPs.
