Clear your appointment books for another excellent evening of experimental films brought to you by Stefan Grabowski’s Balagan Films. Long a bastion of film as art, Balagan presents The Films of Will Hindle on this Thursday, May 19, at the Coolidge Corner Theatre.
Although a contemporary of artists like Brakhage and other big names, Hindle’s work has rarely been screened. However, Hindle was no commonplace name. An active experimenter and one of the loudest voices in the American Avant Garde from the late ’50s until his death in ’87, Will Hindle was heavily involved in the Personal Film Movement–a stark deviation from industrial production that led to a more individualistic filmmaking process. So don’t miss this chance to see a selection of his works projected on 16mm film stock (all of them equally haunting, deeply emotional, and technically astounding). This program is made possible in part thanks to recent restorations with Hindle’s final film, Trekerriff, seen only by a select handful of people previously.
This screening is also a historic event as Balagan returns to one of its first homes–the one and only Coolidge Corner Theatre. While, yes, I might be a bit partial to this area landmark because I happen to work the box office there five days every week, it’s a fantastic chance to see experimental film honored on a beautiful screen, in a beautiful movie theatre. Who knows? If enough people keep showing up (that’s you!), maybe the Coolidge will become a more frequent haven for Balagan and the kind of artistry that it inspires to move through Boston.
The program will be run entirely on 16mm and features:
Pastorale d’Eté (1958) 9 min.
FFFTCM (1967) 5 min.
Billabong (1969) 8 min.
Saint Flournoy Lobos-Logos And The Eastern Europe Fetus Taxing Japan Brides In West Coast Places (1970) 12 min.
Later that Same Night (1971) 10 min.
Watersmith (1969) 32 min.
Trekkeriff (1987) 9 min.
