R Hundro – 007 Town

R Hundro-007 Town

007 TOWN,  Colin White’s second release under the name R Hundro, in the final OSR Tapes batches, is a difficult one to pin down. 10 tracks blend seamlessly together, never allowing the listener to differentiate one song from the other. Delayed out, dub-like, Yamaha drum machine beats are spacious, repetitive and hypnotic.  R Hundro sings from the throat. Not really sure what his trick is but there could be a voice box involved in the recording. The mix is muddy and bassy, throat vocals interspersed between competing guitar lines played through a small Cube amp.

First off, I listen to this record frequently and certain songs are in my constant rotation, notably “The Wheel He Rides.” For me, it’s perfect for an isolated individual listening experience. I listen in my car in the morning, on the exercise bike, out shopping for milk. I’m not sure I’d play 007 TOWN at a dinner party or for friends and that’s alright. Sometimes it’s good to have music to keep to yourself. Let the plebs have the rest. 007 TOWN is your own porcelain music box. Turn the key and play “Clown Symmetry” (track 7)

An easy comparison to R Hundro’s music is early Ween, probably their Pure Guava or Pod era.  The obvious similarity is the use of lo fi drum machines. However, similar to early Ween, R Hundro uses his voice as a weapon. He uses it sporadically, weaving his windpipe vocals in and out of a song when he feels like it. His lyrics can be catchy. I’ve caught myself singing the chorus of track 8 to my cat Ooda. “What’s Your Sleep Number Babe?” He masks his words behind the throat effect, but I tell myself I hear a little John Fogerty at times. Dudes a cajun butterfly.

When I listen to records like this I try to think about what the songwriting process was like. This one is tough for me to dissect. The songs are based around a bunch of distinct guitar ideas/riffs that seem independent of each other, yet their dissonance makes musical sense. This guy is no amateur, there are a lot of sharp, smart musical ideas here.
