Deluxx Folk Implosion – s/t

by

This may be some of the heaviest stuff Barlow has put to tape since his original days in Dinosaur Jr or even Deep Wound. Tossing aside his more introspective material here Lou and the rest of the Deluxe Folk Implosion (John Davis, Bob Fay and Mark Peretta ) instead play with fun loving abandon like kids in a garage. Speaking of kids, that film is probably where most people recognize the band from, originally providing the bratty “Daddy Never Understood” to the soundtrack but as was recently discovered the band recorded an album’s worth of material at the time.

While on first impression it may appear like a hardcore record with titles like “Clothespin Suicide” and “Cavalcade of Death” it avoids all the dogma of that genre opting for a punk Sabbath groove in their heavier moments.(“Greetings From Sarajevo”) Alternately Lou’s vocals are probably the closest thing akin to hc but even he admits none of it should be taken seriously. “The general idea of DFI for me as the vocalist was absurd lyrics sang with the force of ‘serious’ punk. it was an excuse for me to scream my head off and have a good time while enjoying the guitar interplay between Mark and John.” said Barlow in a recent interview with Noisey magazine/website. Elsewhere many of the songs here have a goofy melodic side that could easily pass for Sebadoh cuts(“Reasons I’m in Prison”, “Oven Mitt”). Formed initially to play Folk Implosion songs live listening to this is like being a fly on the wall at their practice space sometime in 1994 on a particular fun night.
