(1/24) HENRY: PORTRAIT OF A SERIAL KILLER (1986) DIR. JOHN MCNAUGHTON @COOLIDGE

by

In his breakout role, Michael Rooker portrays the titular character, an illiterate drifter coldly masking a sadistic personality, roaming the streets of Chicago. One day his alternately depraved roommate Otis (Tom Towles) allows his sister (Tracy Arnold) to live with them after her abusive marriage crumbles. At first the trio lives together pleasantly enough. Before long, however, Otis is sucked into Henry’s life of equally impulsive and calculating murders, eventually coming to enjoy the bloodshed himself. You might understandably be upset for having this film being recommended to you. Henry has a reputation for being a tour de force of disturbing realism, as well as a cult and critical darling for its unflinching take on sociopathy. See it on the big screen and then decide which side of the fence you’re on.
