(5/30 – 5/31) EL TOPO (1970) DIR. ALEJANDRO JODOROWSKY @COOLIDGE

by

The original midnight movie returns for a special midnight showing at Coolidge Corner in 35mm. Imagine if Dali made a movie with cowboys and you’d pretty much get EL TOPO, a surreal Western that transformed its main actor and director Alejandro Jordorowsky into a bonafide superstar in underground culture, revered by the likes of John Lennon and Yoko Ono. A gunfighter dressed all in black and a naked boy (?!) travel through a hot, arid landscape, encountering bizarre characters that often challenge the wandering gunslinger to a duel, wherein he achieves enlightenment upon each victory. And if that sounds weird wait until the second half of the film. This visceral and visually amazing cult classic may have you scratching your head as to what it all means, but Jordorowsky’s bravura aesthetics will have your eyes glued to the screen.

Midnight // Coolidge Corner Theatre // $10.25
