(3/4) THE THIRD MAN (1949) DIR. CAROL REED @SOMERVILLE THEATRE

by

If you’ve never heard a zither before, you’ll love it after watching this. However, the soundtrack is only one aspect that makes THE THIRD MAN a timeless masterpiece that deserves repeated viewings.

Unemployed American pulp fiction writer Holly Martins (Joseph Cotton) comes to war ravaged Austria after being offered work by his longtime friend Harry Lime, portrayed by Orson Welles (who seems to be in every classic movie being shown locally). When Martins goes looking for him, he’s shocked to learn his old buddy has just died following a car accident. In typical noir fashion, he smells foul play and begins looking into Lime’s death, which will eventually lead to a sobering truth about human greed. From its expressionist visuals to the outstanding performances of the two main leads, practically everything about this film clicks. Don’t miss it on the big screen.
