OPENING: Craft & Modernity: Professional Women Artists in Boston @BUAG

by

Craft has been making a comeback of late. Historically, practices like woodworking, pottery and fiber arts were not typically considered as contributions to the sphere of fine art, but instead were classified under the somewhat detracting label of “craft” or “decorative arts.” In this exhibition, curator Caroline M. Riley looks back to the Arts and Crafts movement in turn-of-the-century Boston to consider these issues in relation to female artists, honing in on six women who made their living producing ceramics, photography or printed posters in the iconic art nouveau style. This exhibition examines the historical, political and social factors effecting their professional lives while celebrating their artistic success and that of contemporary artists who continue their legacy.
