(11/17) NO (2012) DIR. PABLO LARRAIN @HFA, DIRECTOR IN PERSON

by

What happens when you mix MAD MEN with Latin American political corruption? Find out in NO, a recent rave from Chile that portrays the campaign leading up to the 1988 plebiscite on whether to keep longtime authoritarian ruler Augusto Pinochet in power. Gael García Bernal heads the advertising campaign charged with encouraging voters to say no to giving Pinochet another term. But by doing so he faces threats from secret policemen who are quite content with maintaining the status quo. With its unique portrayal of mass manipulation and equally unique 80s visual style, NO is an Oscar nominated film that showcases the unbridled talent of an up and coming director, who’ll be at the Harvard Film Archive no less to discuss his work.
