Common Threads is an outreach program that includes a publication of eight diverse, accessible poems written by Massachusetts poets, published alongside engaging discussion questions, writing prompts, and a brief guide to reading poetry. The intent is for people all over the state to use Common Threads in a way that works for them and their community, whether that’s by reading and discussing one or two poems on a given day, or whether it’s meeting several times to discuss several poems. This particular group at the BPL will discuss a handful of poems in Common Threads with a particular emphasis on craft, technique, and the poetry of place. During the last half of the session, participants will respond to short creative writing prompts in order to actively engage with the poems discussed and inspire new material.
