Maine-based composer and improvisor Steve Norton’s musical practice is currently focused on the gathering field-recorded sound which he utilizes in electroacoustic composition as well as in performative, improvisational contexts. His interest is to increasingly bring the outside world into his work via field recording and topical decisions which engage ecological and social issues. This is exemplified by “Requiem,” a four-channel sound composition on the topic of extinction, created using the sounds of recently-extinct birds and frogs.

Steve has recently completed an MFA in the Intermedia MFA program at the University of Maine, where his research examines electroacoustic music, improvisation, field recording, modernity, the environment and society. He has composed and/or played avant-garde jazz, free improvisation and experimental music in Boston and around the US and Canada for over 30 years. He has over 25 releases to his credit with artists such as Debris, Vic Rawlings, Joe Morris, Great Circle Saxophone Quartet, Mission Creep, Either/Orchestra and If, Bwana.
