The trailer is an art form, condensing 90-minute films into two minutes of pure insanity. What started as a showcase for the Brattle’s prodigious collection of 35mm trailers has, slowly but surely, become an annual highlight of the Boston cinema scene – a full-blown summer extravaganza, complete with free barbecue, great tunes, and animated interludes. Best of all, however, is the Trailer Smackdown: each year, the Brattle comes up with a title for a fictional film, and invites local filmmakers to create a trailer to sell the hell out of it. This year’s title is Surrender. Cheap Trick jokes abound! –Oscar Goff
