Wartime absurdity a la Kubrick. As part of the Brattle Theatre’s celebration of the centennial birthday of screen legend Kirk Douglas they’ll be screening the masterful adaptation of the World War I drama about a French army officer (Douglas) trying to defend the lives of three soldiers facing execution for cowardice. Banned from being shown in France for nearly 20 years due to its portrayal of the French military in a less than glamorous light, the film has since transcended its narrow minded pigeon holing by the armed forces to be considered among the very best films about “justice” during war.
