Opening Reception: Expressions Unbound and States of Freedom

Thu, Sep 6 2018 5:30 pm - 7:30 pm

The Tufts University Art Galleries are inviting people to join them on September 6th for the opening of their two fall exhibitions: Expressions Unbound: American Outsider Art from the Andrew and Linda Safran Collection and States of Freedom: The Figure in Flux.

Expressions Unbound features recently donated works from the collection of Andrew and Linda Safran, the largest donation of works by African American artists to date. Expressions Unbound features works by self-taught artists Thornton Dial, Howard Finster, Bessie Harvey, William L. Hawkins, Mary T. Smith, Jimmy Lee Sudduth, and Purvis Young.

States of Freedom: The Figure in Flux highlights the practices of artists who have represented the body by flattening or fragmenting the human form. Transcending time and place, States of Freedom offers a glimpse into the many ways various artists represent humanity. The exhibition features work from Tufts’ book and art collections as well as sculptures, paintings, and video by artists Derrick Adams, A. K. Burns, Kate Costello, Harry Dodge, Maria Lassnig, Anna K.E., Lucy Kim, Kiki Kogelnik, Karen Moss, Jeanine Oleson, Lorna Simpson, and Alexandria Smith.
